Leading performers living with
Type 1 diabetes - including
cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason
and comedian Ed Gamble -
gathered together for an event to
celebrate the talents of those with
the condition. ArT1st Live took place
on Saturday at London's prestigious
Drapers' Hall in support of the Type
1 diabetes charity JDRF, which raises
funds for new treatments and cures
for the condition.
The ArT1st project was founded
in 2019 by Professor Partha Kar
OBE, National Specialty Advisor
for Diabetes at NHS England, in
collaboration with a committee of
people living with the condition and
diabetes healthcare professionals,
to unite people who have Type
1 diabetes. Its events are coorganised
by people living with
the condition. Following on from
a hugely successful virtual event
in 2020, Professor Kar and coorganisers
had set their sights on
an in-person event for autumn
2021. Their vision was rewarded,
with a night introduced and hosted
by Ed Gamble, and starring Sheku
Kanneh-Mason leading a bill of other
musicians and performers living with
Type 1 diabetes.
Gamble is best known as a regular
on BBC2's Mock the Week and as
co-creator and co-host of charttopping podcast
Off Menu with
James Acaster. Sheku Kanneh-Mason
became a household name in 2018
after performing at the wedding of
the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at
Windsor Castle.
Professor Kar said: "I have always
firmly believed in the many benefits
that building connections and
mutual support within the diabetes
community can offer."
Co-organiser Adrian Long said:
"The pandemic has of course had a
big impact on lives already affected
by type 1 diabetes. Gathering
together in person to celebrate the
talents of people with the condition
has been truly uplifting."
Hilary Nathan, Director of
Communications at JDRF, said: "Our
thanks and congratulations go to all
of those behind this special event. It
has provided valuable support for our
mission to find new treatments and
cures for type 1 diabetes."
ArT1st Live in aid of JDRF UK
has been made possible thanks to
corporate sponsors Abbott and
Novo Nordisk and supporting
sponsor Dexcom.
