to pass an ARDS test to get a racing
licence. For me though I had to prove
that my diabetes would not hamper my
ability to race. I had to take a medical in
London with a Motor Sports Association
registered doctor. No reports from my
own doctors mattered one jot, not even
from my diabetes clinic."
Malin competed in his first official race
on 19 June 2016, the day after his final
GCSE exam, and came second in his
class. "It was the first time I'd even driven
that car. It was literally a baptism of fire."
Regarding his parents he admits
that his dad, while not actually being a
motorsports driver, does have an interest
in the sport. "He supported me hugely
and we ran the Mazda ourselves but
now I am racing with Ginetta, which is a
heritage British sports car brand originally
started in 1958. With a car factory outside
of Leeds, the company runs a series
of Ginetta Championships in its GT5
Challenge. They employ a professional
race team - Richardson Racing."
When it comes to checking his
diabetes control Malin relies on oldfashioned
blood tests during a normal "From the day I got it in 2013 the Accu-Chek Combo
changed my life. It made managing my diabetes
so much easier as it could do things like bolus
recommendations. It just took the maths out of my
daily calculations, and
the fact that you had
to blood test to get the
bolus recommendation
seemed like a really good
reason to do a blood test!
