A6 TouchCare System
A relative newcomer, Medtrum is in the
process of introducing its A6 TouchCare
System to the UK. It incorporates a tubefree
disposable patch pump, a CGM
sensor and includes a Predictive Low
Glucose Suspend (PLGS) mechanism.
A semi-closed loop system, it can help
prevent hypos and reduce the burden of
monitoring and controlling glucose. Insulin
delivery is automatically suspended when
the sensor glucose is predicted to reach
the low limit in a set period of time. Basal
insulin will be automatically resumed
when the sensor glucose is within the
target range. The A6 TouchCare Pump is
compact and, due to being disposable,
needs no extra infusion sets. Relatively
thin, small and light it is easily hidden
under clothing despite combining a 200-
unit insulin reservoir, infusion set, pumping
mechanism, and power supply. Basal
patterns are stored in the pump, delivery
continuing even when the PDM is out
of range. Easy to operate, with remote
bolus dosing an option, it can be worn in
the shower, when swimming and doing
other exercise. The corresponding A6
TouchCare CGM has a seven-day sensor
life, is accurate and stable with a compact
and discreet transmitter that records and
fully uploads data automatically to the
Medtrum software. This is all managed
by the TouchCare Personal Diabetes
Manager (PDM) that fits in a pocket and
can be operated using just one hand
using smart remote control, which is to
say that it is connected to the sensor and
pump via Bluetooth. Using the PDM you
can see sensor information at a glance
including trend arrows with customizable
reminders and alerts.

Accu-Chek Insight
The Accu-Chek Insight insulin pump
therapy system is the first insulin pump
to offer the option of using a prefilled
insulin cartridge, one of several aspects
that add to the ease of use, safe handling
and discreetness. Like the Accu-Chek
Combo, there are two main components:
the Accu-Chek Insight insulin pump and
a handset (the Accu-Chek Aviva Insight
diabetes manager). The diabetes manager
offers blood glucose monitoring, a built-in
clinically proven bolus advisor with data
management on-the-go as well as an
remote control function for the insulin
pump. Once placed under clothing, there
While neither the Accu-Chek Combo
or Accu-Chek Insight pump is
currently sensor augmented, Roche
is undertaking research into its ownbrand CGM system which is currently
undergoing clinical trials. Meanwhile,
as previously reported, Senseonics
has signed an exclusive distribution
deal with Roche for its Eversense
Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)
System. The agreement gives Roche, a
well-known diabetes player, the right to
market and sell the Eversense CGM in
some countries in Europe with a launch
in the UK expected before the end of
this year. The announcement came
after Senseonics announced CE Mark
approval for Eversense. The system
consists of a long-term wear sensor,
which is implanted subcutaneously
and can be worn for up to 90 days, a
transmitter, and a mobile app.
