A European-based solution,
Diasend, launched earlier in 2006
and had been used across many
hospital diabetes clinics, as well as by
some patients using it from home. It
had also been designed as a way to
easily upload information from most
glucose meters, insulin pumps, CGMs
and even mobile phone apps. It was
acquired by Glooko in 2016.
Johannesson explains, "The
transition from Diasend to Glooko
across Europe will be completed this
year. We've essentially taken the best
of both in terms of capabilities and
have shifted the branding to Glooko
so that it is a global platform."
Easy access
Glooko is widely available for home
use and is based on the principle that
simple and effective communication
between care provider and patient is
a prerequisite for the best care.
Says Johannesson, "The Glooko
system consolidates and presents
this information in clear and
structured reports, no matter what
the device is or how the data is
stored. By registering with and then
downloading Glooko's software,
people with diabetes are able to view
their data and share it with their
healthcare professional (HCP), if
they want to. For this the clinic has a
and most people with diabetes know
the value of seamless data transfers
- it means being able to easily spot
trends, and easily communicate
this information either from HCP
to patient or the other way around.
This information is often 'locked'
into meters, pumps and CGMs but
sharing, accessing and understanding
this information by using Glooko will
lead to the best care outcomes."
Interoperability
Glooko personal software is
compatible with both PCs and
MACs and is the leading and most
comprehensive platform that lets
multiple devices input their data into
one system. Glooko is compatible
with almost 300devices. These
devices include blood glucose
meters, insulin pumps, connected
insulin pens and continuous glucose
monitors (CGMs). It also allows you
to choose to link to various activity
tracker systems including Fitbit, Up
by Jawbone, Nike+ FuelBand, Moves
and Runkeeper.

One aim of the company is that
in the future it will be used as the
industry standard for data transfer.
"A patient should be able to get
data into Glooko from anywhere,"
continues Johannesson, "which
makes it a 'virtual clinic'. Both HCPs
