JDRF BOOST
FOR OPEN
PROTOCOL
The new Accu-Chek website is designed to support people with diabetes using AccuChek products
to live well. As well as all the product information you could ever need,
the interactive website includes tips on managing diabetes on a day-to-day basis. Topics
include travel nutrition, blood glucose monitoring and driving. You can upload your blood
test results from Accu-Chek blood test systems in order to assess patterns and potentially
make adjustments to your control. As the website says, 'Numbers are not enough. It's
what you do with them that counts.' It just takes a moment to register, then you'll have
access to members-only information, other resources as well as offers designed to make
living with diabetes easier. The site also makes it easy for registered customers to order
batteries and accessories for their Accu-Chek products. www.accu-chek.co.uk

JDRF (USA) has announced a new
initiative to help pave the way for 'open
protocol' automated insulin delivery
systems, also known as artificial pancreas
(AP) technology. The initiative is intended
to encourage manufacturers to give
users greater control over their insulin
delivery devices. JDRF will be providing
funding, as well as support with regards
to regulatory and liability hurdles.
JDRF's Chief Mission Officer Aaron
Kowalski, Ph.D explains, "The purpose of
this is to support innovation and enable
people with Type 1 diabetes to use an
open-protocol approach safely." Open
protocol includes undertakings such as
Nightscout (and is sometimes referred to
as hacking). He says, "We need to ensure
the regulatory pathway is clear, and we
will work with industry stakeholders to
make devices compatible. By making
this approach more accessible to a wider
group of people with diabetes, users of
insulin delivery devices will be able to
manage their blood glucose levels better,
and in a way that works best for them."
