Diabetes UK
Diabetes UK has issued comprehensive
guidance around the Covid-19 vaccines
and what it means for people with
diabetes. People with diabetes are
vulnerable to developing a severe illness if
they contract coronavirus, and the vaccine
is the most effective way to prevent this.
Most people with diabetes are in priority
group six - people aged 16 to 64 years
with underlying health conditions. Side
effects from the vaccine are usually
mild, including soreness at the injection
site, feeling tired and a headache, and
shouldn't last longer than 48 hours. The
vaccine may also lead to higher blood
glucose levels for a short time. To read

Rising rates?
There is growing evidence to suggest that
coronavirus might be triggering diabetes
in some people or making the condition
worse for others. Faye Riley PhD, Diabetes
UK's Senior Research Communications
Officer takes a look at the research so far
and explain what scientists are doing to
find answers. To read the full story, CLICK

Covid-19 & Priority Group Six
As this issue of the magazine goes live, the UK has moved to
vaccinating persons in Priority Group Six. This group covers
those over 60 years of age and anyone considered to be at
risk, including everyone with any form of diabetes. This is a
round-up of news and support resources.
NHS
The NHS explains how it identified people
as being potentially at high risk (clinically
extremely vulnerable) by working with
the University of Oxford to identify the
pieces of information about people
and their health that are needed by the
risk assessment model to generate
as accurate risk assessment results
as possible. "We identified where this
information could be found in existing
datasets held by NHS Digital," as stated
on the NHS website, "We then gathered
the specific pieces of information from the
records of people who could potentially be
considered high risk (clinically extremely
vulnerable). As the national information
and technology partner to the health and
social care system in England, we have
legal permission to securely collect and
analyse this data." Read more HERE.
