BETTER THAN
A SILVER SPOON
Spoonit's founder Lisa Bailey explains how she came to create
the Carb Spoon. She currently works within the NHS as part of a
weight management service in Wales.
"
I was 13 years old in a
home economics class
and I read a book that
explained the role of a
dietitian. My mum had
always struggled with her weight and
even as a young child I could see how
unhappy it made her. My uncle, who has
Type 1 diabetes, collapsed in an airport
just before a flight because of a hypo. I
remember him talking about his struggles
with food. The importance of nutrition
resonated with me and strengthened my
decision to train as a dietitian.
"I've been a Dietitian in the NHS
for about 15 years now, specializing
in diabetes and, more recently, weight
management. It frustrates me that with the
wealth of information we have available
to us today, we are more confused about
what to eat than ever before. Being newly
diagnosed with diabetes is stressful
enough without having to wade through
endless pages of conflicting information
about food. The same struggle is true
for those seeking the best way to lose
weight.
Labels with love
"So many diets today focus on cutting
foods out. That can mean that they lack
essential nutrition or have complicated
ways to work out what and how much to
eat. This isn't good for your mind or your
body. Very often people find diets difficult
to maintain, they quickly return to bad
eating habits, gain weight and the 'diet
cycle' starts again.
"Portion control offers an alternative to
traditional diets where the focus is mainly
on what you eat, allowing you flexibility
with your choices. Let's stop the 'you
can't' when it comes to eating and start
with 'you can'.
"You can eat any type of food, so
you can continue eating the foods you
like. You can eat the same meals as
the rest of your family but make yours
perfectly portioned for your own needs.
You can understand portion control - with
Spoonit's easy to follow accompanying
guides. You can stop feeling guilty about
the food you eat - our products help you
eat the right amounts.
"I was tired of hearing about fad diets
and the restrictive dieting rules the people
I spoke to were trying to live by, so I
embarked on a journey to create a simple
solution to portion sizes, taking the focus
off what people eat and concentrating
more on how much. I believe that being
in control of your portion sizes, not only
gives much more food freedom and
choice, it also helps you build a better
relationship with food."
