KITLIVING
FOOD
REPORT
use to look up foods and assess intake of
carbs, calories and other nutrients.
• The flashcards are intended as a
teaching tool and memory aid, so that
people grasp important information about
popular food items. One side of the card
shows a large photo of a common food
(such as pasta), and turning the card
over reveals the nutritional values for that
portion.
We now have three distinct packs of
flashcards:
• PACK 1: A range of foods containing
carbohydrates.
• PACK 2: A mixture of carb and noncarb foods,
such as meat, fish, eggs and
cheese.
• PACK 3: We recently launched a
World Foods pack containing a selection
of African, Arabic, Caribbean and South
Asian foods to accompany our World
Foods book.
The flashcards are extremely popular
with healthcare professionals and parents
of children with diabetes. As well as being
used nationally on many type 1 education
courses, they are also used in type 2
courses such as DESMOND. Many
people with diabetes and their families
also use the flashcards to help with their
own self-education at home.
In my own experience, I often do a
higher / lower game, where people work
in pairs and estimate the carbs in the
food shown on a flashcard. They then
look at the next card and decide if the
carbs are higher or lower, and have a go
at estimating the amount. A simple but
engaging game.
