is reimbursed for all people with
Type 1 diabetes, but people with
Type 2 diabetes can only get the
product reimbursed if they meet
certain criteria, such as using insulin
several times a day or having poorly
controlled HbA1c levels. HbA1c
provides an estimate of average
glucose levels over a period of time
and is the standard measurement of
glycaemic control for people with
diabetes.ii The new meta-analysis
found that people with a higher
HbA1c at baseline experienced
greater reductions in HbA1c after
being initiated on the FreeStyle
Libre system.i
"Our FreeStyle Libre system is
the most studied wearable glucose
monitor with proven clinical and
real-world data from more than 1
million users," said Alexander Seibold,
EMEA medical director for Abbott's
diabetes care business.
Brighter AB
Actiste
Brighter is a health-tech company
from Sweden with a vision of a world
where managing chronic diseases
is no longer such a struggle. They
believe a data-centric approach is
key to providing smarter care for
chronic conditions. Their daily-care
solutions are designed with a vision
of facilitating the flow of real-life
treatment data between chronicdisease
patients, their loved ones
and their care providers. The aim is
to improve quality of life, easing the
burden on healthcare systems, and
opening new opportunities for datadriven
research.
The makers of Actiste say, "We
see Actiste® playing a big role in this
shift to remote care for diabetes. The
service does this in two important
ways. First, the Actiste device
records all data on a patient's blood
glucose measurements and insulin
doses. With its built-in global mobile
connection - included as part of
the subscription - this data can be
shared with a patient's caregiver, who
can provide remote support from
anywhere in the world.
"The other way Actiste helps
to protect diabetics is through its
feature for the automated re-supply
of lancets, test strips and needles.
As Actiste records all blood glucose
measurements and insulin injections,
it is able to detect when a patient is
running low on these essential items.
The system automatically places
an order for refills, which are then
delivered directly to the user. There
is not necessarily a need for people
with diabetes to physically visit a
hospital or pharmacy to restock."
Actiste's solutions are based
on patented technology for the
remote monitoring and collection of
data on specified bio-markers and
volumes of medication injected. "We
believe this data-centric approach
is key to providing smarter care for
both diabetes and other chronic
conditions too," they say.
Coming soon is also a smaller
version in the form of Actiste Mini.
The manufacturer says, "We are
broadening our diabetes-care range
with the introduction of Actiste Mini
- a product and service offering for
taking blood samples, measuring
blood glucose and monitoring
values over time. Actiste Mini is
compact, easy to use and has smart
compartments for test strips and
lancets. It has an in-built mobile
connection and all data is saved
automatically to be synchronized
with the Companion app. Actiste
Mini has been developed to simplify
blood-glucose monitoring and
motivate better diabetes control."
Brighter AB has signed an
agreement with the Northern Care
Alliance NHS Foundation Trust.
The agreement covers a fundedresearch
study with Actiste Diabetes
Management as a Service (ADMS) in
the city of Salford.
