(multiple daily injections). "There was
a great juvenile unit at the hospital
at the time, and both girls went
there, they were very supportive.
For myself, I was offered a DAFNE
(Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating)
course there. I was one of the first
to take the course at my hospital,
which took place over a full week.
There was no Zoom back then - you
had to turn up in person! I did that
about 15 years ago and learning to
carb count made a huge impact on
my diabetes management. Everything
made sense. It helped me to eat
whenever I wanted to, and to dose
smaller amounts of insulin while
not only maintaining but improving
my control."
MDI to Pod
So, what about insulin pumps and
glucose sensors? Millar currently
uses the FreeStyle Libre to monitor
his glucose and says, "I started to
hear about pumps seven or eight
years ago, but I was put off by the
look of them. I did not like the idea
of tubing. So, I didn't do it. A little
while later, one of the diabetes
specialist nurses suggested the
Omnipod DASH® System - a tubeless
insulin pump*.
Apprehensive at first, I started
on Omnipod DASH in May 2022. I
was part of a 'pump start' group and
though I thought the technology
would be complicated, we literally
got the whole thing set up over
a coffee. It's the best thing that's
happened to me in terms of my
diabetes management."
With the Omnipod DASH, Millar
moved from five or six injections a
day to wearing a tubeless Pod that
administers his insulin over the
course of 3 days (up to 72 hours)
before he changes it for a new one.
He says, "It's great. It has a personal
diabetes manager (PDM) from
which you can remotely give a bolus
(mealtime or correction dose) and
you have the ability to adjust your
basal (background) insulin delivery
too. All this is delivered via the Pod,
also known as a 'patch pump', on
your body. For me, it's much more
simple and more flexible than MDI**.
I remain passionate about my health,
managing my condition and sharing
my experience to hopefully help
others who are in the same boat."
When we spoke, Millar was
looking forward to one day moving
on to the latest Omnipod technology
- The Omnipod® 5 Automated Insulin
Delivery System. This tubeless
hybrid closed loop system is newly
available in the UK, integrating with a
glucose sensor to enable automated
insulin delivery.
Millar says, "Age should not
matter when it comes to diabetes
technology. Change can be scary,
but after more than 40 years on
injections, I found the transition to
Omnipod DASH much easier than
I anticipated. There's no barrier to
entry. Better medical provisions, and
now this diabetes technology, means
we can achieve things we maybe
once didn't think we'd be able to. It
fits superbly into my daily work and
leisure time and I spend less time
worrying about my diabetes."
