Diabetes UK's
complications
research
Research commissioned by
Diabetes UK has found that lifechanging
and largely preventable
complications are causing 'untold
hardship' for people with diabetes
and costing the UK healthcare
system £6.2bn a year.
The research, carried out
by the York Health Economics
Consortium, University of York,
also examined how these costs
will rise significantly over time if
action is not taken to reduce the
number of people developing Type
2 diabetes and improve outcomes
for everyone living with diabetes.
Diabetes UK say the findings
not only highlight the seriousness
of diabetes, but also the huge
opportunity for lives to be
transformed through a greater
focus on early care and support.
Accordingly, the charity is
calling for:
• More attention and resource
to ensure people with diabetes
get all their routine checks and
follow-up care, including access
to technologies and treatments.
This would reduce the number
of people going on to develop
complications.
• A greater focus on support and
education at diagnosis to help
people with diabetes manage
their condition effectively.
• Bold action from the next UK
Government to reduce the
number of people developing
Type 2 diabetes - including
measures to tackle the
promotion of unhealthy food
and drink.

Survey shows obesity
misunderstood
New research from Yazen Health,
a provider of medically-assisted
weight loss treatment, as found
that over one-third (37%) of Brits
mistakenly view obesity as a personal
choice rather than a chronic medical
disease, while 43% attribute it to
laziness.
The results highlight a disconnect
between public perceptions and the
biological drivers of obesity, since
the medical community widely
recognises obesity as a chronic
disease that requires proper medical
treatment and management.
"These findings underscore the
need for greater public education
around the complex factors that
contribute to obesity," said Dr.
Martin Carlsson, Co-Founder and
Chief Medical Officer of Yazen.
"Obesity is not simply a matter of
willpower or lifestyle habits. It's
a metabolic disorder influenced
by genetics, hormones, and other
physiological aspects. With obesity
raising risks for over 200 conditions
like heart disease and cancer,
we need to replace judgement
with compassion and provide
accessible, evidence-based
obesity care that addresses the
multifaceted drivers of this
disease".
It is estimated that 63.8%
of adults in England are
either overweight or obese,
now costing the UK economy
£98bn annually. However, the
survey found that only 26%
would consider accessing a proven
regional weight loss programme.
This is likely to be fuelled by
misguided beliefs that obesity is
a personal choice (33%) or purely
genetic (33%), rather than a chronic
medical issue.
