DASH-ing to Omnipod 5
I met with Marcus Bosano about two years ago.
Back then, he was using the Omnipod DASH® System
but has recently moved to the newer Omnipod® 5
Automated Insulin Delivery System. By Sue Marshall.

I think so much
less about my
diabetes, have
fewer alarms
going off and my
overall wellbeing
has improved
dramatically.
Meeting back up with
Marcus Bosano was
hugely amusing. We met
at the same place as
last time and could look back at the
changes that have taken place since.
It's nice to report on people at one
stage in their diabetes journey, and to
meet again at a later stage to see that
new technologies are simply making
life with diabetes easier.
Like DASH, Omnipod 5 consists
of a tubeless Pod and a separate
handheld controller, but the
advancement in this system means
it works as a hybrid closed loop.'
Bosano shares his experience of
the upgrade in technology and
the impact it's had on his diabetes
management, and more importantly,
his quality of life.
The last time we met, we chatted
about Bosano making the switch
to an insulin pump after 17 years
on multiple daily injections. But
since then, there have been further
changes, which is why I wanted to
meet and chat with him again…
"I went on to the Omnipod 5
about three months ago," Bosano
excitedly told me. "It was an upgrade
to the latest version of Omnipod,
since I was previously using the
Omnipod DASH System. I did have
a choice about upgrading and I was
keen! The fact that it was a hybrid
closed loop system was the main
draw, and the fact that I wanted to
sleep better."
"On the Omnipod DASH system,
although I was happy with it and it
was a vast improvement from MDI,
I was conscious that I was getting
information from my glucose sensor
which I then had to input into the
system. I had to do a lot of the middle
thinking and use information from
my glucose sensor and insulin pump
to make a decision."

A hybrid closed loop system (also
sometimes referred to as an
Automated Insulin Delivery (AID)
System), like the Omnipod 5, uses
a compatible glucose sensor, an
insulin pump system and a controlled
algorithm. The algorithm takes the
readings from the glucose sensor and
automatically adjusts the background
insulin accordingly, taking away a lot
of the thought process and decision
