innovation in practice
The 2024 QiC Diabetes Awards also
saw the new category, Improvements
in Diabetes Care Using Data, received
a high number of entries of an
excellent standard. The winner of this
new category was Integrated Diabetes
Care for People with Advanced CKD
(chronic kidney disease): Clinical
Research Programme (Dr Hellena
Habte-Asres) by Royal Free London
Foundation Trust.
Other awards
There were a series of outstanding
contributions and lifetime
achievement awards as well. NHS
Wales gave its support to the
sixth 'NHS Wales Outstanding
Contribution Award for Services in
Diabetes, which went to Dr Sarah
Davies, National Diabetes Strategic
Network, Wales, as well as the
eighth NHS England Outstanding
Contribution Award for Services in
Diabetes, which went to Professor
Partha Kar and the NHSE HCL Team.
The Lifetime Achievement award
was presented to Simon O'Neill,
Director of Health Intelligence
and Professional Liaison, Diabetes
UK and the QiC Diabetes Chair of
Judges. James Ridgeway, Education
and Research at LDC / Diabetes
Specialist Nurse, won the Unsung
Hero Award and the Outstanding
Educator in Diabetes Award. Dawn
Ackroyd, Senior Diabetes Nurse,
University Hospitals of Leicester
won the Diabetes Professional of the
Year award
Daniel Newman won the 2024
People's Award, supported by
Diabetes UK, which recognises
someone very special who has
supported/cared for people with
diabetes in 2023 and is not a
healthcare professional. Living with
T1D for 28 years and managing some
complications as a result, Daniel has
made significant contributions to
improving the lives of those living
with diabetes.
QiC Programmes are run by
PMGroup and were launched in 2011
in order to bring the NHS, industry
and patient groups closer together to
increase joint working. The goal was
to recognise good practice in the UK
and provide opportunities for sharing
projects and initiatives that will
ultimately benefit all patients.
