Reaching for the moon
John Sjolund leads the team
undertaking the diabetes insulin pen
Luna Project. He says, I am incredibly
excited to announce that we have
started the pivotal trials for Luna, the
automated insulin delivery system
that our team has been working on
for the last few years. It's automated
insulin delivery-but for the more
than 90% of people who are unwilling
or unable to use an insulin pump.
That's a whole lot of people who can
benefit from vastly improved glucose
control, more sleep, and less worry.
We call it, Better Nights for Better
Days.
"For as long as I can remember,
managing diabetes has been an
ever-present part of my life. Since
being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes
at the age of four, I've lived through
every imaginable challenge, sleepless
nights, and constant worry about
keeping my glucose levels in check.
In the early years, my diabetes was
managed through twice daily bovine
insulin injections and urine glucose
testing, then came more rapid blood
glucose testing, then insulin pens,
then better analogue insulins, smart
insulin pens, CGM and then - holy
smokes - starting to close the loop
"At Luna, we believe in creating
a more straightforward, safer,
and more balanced approach to
diabetes care, especially regarding
nighttime glucose control. Our
goal is to make the most advanced
technologies, with significant clinical
benefits, much more accessible to
drastically more people. I believe we
are achieving this goal in the most
significant way ever in our careers
with Luna. For us, it's about making
diabetes less complex and less costly
so we can focus on everything other
than diabetes more of the time.
"Did you know that over 90%
of everybody who takes insulin
uses insulin pens? Did you know
that despite how amazing insulin
pumps are for some people, the
overwhelming majority of people
living with diabetes are unwilling
or unable to use one? Starting this
trial is a significant milestone for
us, bringing us closer to offering
Luna to the millions of people who
could benefit from it. The trial will
evaluate the safety and effectiveness
of our system, and it's a significant
step toward regulatory approval.
We are confident that the results
will demonstrate how Luna can
revolutionize how people manage
diabetes at night.
