Mounjaro
coming to UK
Eli Lilly has announced that it would
bring the Mounjaro drug against obesity
and diabetes to British patients, weeks
after winning clearance for pre-filling
it into an injection pen. The go-ahead
from the Medicines & Healthcare
products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)
would make Britain the first major
market to be supplied with the drug in
the multi-shot pen, branded as Kwikpen.
The pen will allow for convenient use
and be good for a month's treatment of
one subcutaneous shot per week.
Tirzepatide is the active ingredient
in Mounjaro, which will compete with
Novo Nordisk's Wegovy (semaglutide)
injection drug in a booming weight-loss
market.
Digital diabetes prevention
NHS Scotland is planning to set up a Digital Diabetes
Prevention Programme, using digital technology in
clinical interventions.
Its Commons Services Agency - otherwise known as
NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) - has published a
prior information notice for potential suppliers on the
plan, indicating that it is expected to support around
2,000 people in its first year then 1,400 annually over the
next two years.
It is estimated at up to a third of adults in Scotland are
living with prediabetes - the majority being unaware -
and 5-10% will progress to Type 2 diabetes every year, but
various studies have shown that the progression can be
prevented or delayed by behaviour change, which would
be delivered through this programme.
The programme will seek to provide a proven clinical
intervention using digital technology that will provide
support over a nine-month period, using trained lifestyle
coaches to enable participants to track progress against
their own goals via a digital application.
Emotional
wellbeing
Dealing with Type 1 every day can
have an emotional impact. Constant
blood glucose tests and targets can
lead to stress, and the relentlessness
of managing it can get overwhelming.
Accordingly, JDRF have published a
helpful online emotional wellbeing
resource, providing tips and guidance on
many aspects of emotional stress caused
by Type 1 diabetes - and ways of dealing
with them.

Ramadan and diabetes
Ensuring the safety of Muslim people with diabetes as they observe
fasting during Ramadan is the focus of a new leaflet released by a team
of specialist nurses.
Trend Diabetes has developed its first "Ramadan and Diabetes"
leaflet to help people with diabetes who wish to fast during Ramadan
to understand how to manage their glucose levels and glucose testing
during this time, as well as how to manage their food and fluids intake.
The leaflet also contains information on how to manage glucose testing
and non-insulin treatments during Ramadan, as well as advising when
Muslim people with diabetes who are fasting during Ramadan should
seek medical help from a healthcare professional.
