"Over the years, I have become a
passionate advocate of ensuring
pumps are adequately protected,
so that diabetics can lead full,
active and expansive lives without
fear of damaging their pumps.
Manufacturers have come a long
way and we work closely with the
manufacturers, NHS trusts and
diabetic clinics to provide support
and guidance for people who are
diagnosed with this life changing
condition.
"I feel very strongly about the
importance of insuring diabetes
management equipment, so much
so that I went on to set up a scheme
to provide the vital protection
people with diabetes need for their
equipment. This scheme is now used
by thousands of people and still costs
less than two cups of shop-bought
coffee per month to cover. It was
£6.95 per month for the coverage,
and still is.
• Claim settlement time. Working
with a specialist insurer you
know that the claims handling
team understand the need for
speed and are all trained on T1
Diabetes and Pumps. They assess
the claim with urgency and have
purchasing arrangements with all
the major manufacturers to get the
replacement pump to the user in
the shortest time possible.
• Process roadblocks and delays.
With our scheme the user is
protected from the usual claim/
assess claim/obtain quotes/agree
settlement money/Purchase
replacement goods process. Even if
the general home contents insurer
agrees the claim quickly, they
do not have supply relationships
with the major pump and CGM
manufacturers which will inevitably
introduce delay.
• International cover for main and
loan pump. Our scheme provides
this cover automatically at no
additional cost.
• Policy 'Excess and Renewal'
charges. Our scheme removes
these costs.
Peace of Mind
Unless the user gets detailed
confirmation from the insurer
regarding level of cover, policy
excess costs, timescales to replace
the equipment and the process they
will follow they cannot be sure they
would receive adequate protection.
If you have any insurance related
questions or would like to know
more about the options available to
you, please do not hesitate to get
in touch."
EDITOR'S COMMENT: After Mr
Bainbridge contacted me to talk
about doing some coverage of his
insulin pump and CGM insurance, I
decided to do some research about
kit insurance, life insurance and
general advice about writing a will
too (why not?). This will be published
in a future issue. Having said that, I
do use this policy and have done for
years, though I have never had to
access it as, to date, the supplier of
the pump I use has replaced faulty
pumps. - Sue Marshall
