More than 50 people with Type 1
diabetes from around the UK gathered
at Loughborough University to work with
sports specialists to learn about blood
glucose management techniques, and
to conquer fears about exercising at the
Animas Sports and Exercise Weekend.
Recent UK research has shown that
people with insulin-dependent diabetes
often report a reduction in their activity
levels around the time of diagnosis. Key
barriers to exercise reported are a fear of
hypoglycaemic episodes and a perceived
lack of knowledge and confidence of how
to maintain blood glucose control whilst
exercising. The aim of the weekend was
to directly address these fears about
increasing activity levels. Some of the
attendees were on the Animas Vibe insulin
pump. The three-day event included
expert advice from Dr Ian Gallen on
lifestyle and active diabetes management,
with specially structured exercise sessions
designed to encourage participants to
undertake activities including endurance
and high intensity training and spinning.
As inspiration to live a life without
limits, motivational speaker and Animas
Hero Roddy Riddle will be pushing himself
to the limits as he completes Beyond the
Ultimate Ice Ultra Marathon in February
2015 and hopes to encourage other
people with Type 1 diabetes to live their
life without limits.
Dr Ian Gallen, Consultant Physician
and Endocrinologist at Royal Berkshire
Foundation Trust and Honorary Senior
Clinical Lecturer, University of Oxford
Medical School says, "Many people with
Type 1 diabetes avoid exercising for fear of
hypoglycaemia or unexplained high blood
sugars. Better access to structured sport
and exercise education programmes for
people with Type 1 diabetes, such as
this, is something I would like to see more
freely available across the UK."
