DAFNE free courses for HCPs and adults
with Type 1 diabetes
Gill Thompson, National director DAFNE programme
tells us, "We are currently offering the following
free training to all NHS or publicly funded services
diabetes teams across the UK, Republic of Ireland
and Crown Dependencies and the adults with Type 1
diabetes that they provide services for."
DAFNE Closed Loop
Essentials course
The recent NICE guidance in relation to the access
to closed loops for those with Type 1 diabetes, will
see a large percentage of the adult Type 1 population
afforded the opportunity to transition to closed
loops over the next five years. This represents a huge
logistical task for diabetes services. In addition,
some people expect closed loop systems to function
perfectly all the time, which is unrealistic.
In response we developed the online DAFNE
Closed Loop Essential (CLE) course for adults with
Type 1 diabetes that may not previously completed
a DAFNE course or other structured education and
need upskilling in intensive insulin management,
carbohydrate counting, pump therapy and the
fundamentals of closed loop therapy. This course
provides basic knowledge, designed in collaboration
with the Diabetes Technology Network UK aligning
to the essential skills identified by DTN-UK to
manage closed loops safely.
The course will help diabetes teams transition
large numbers of adults to closed loops from either
pen or pump therapy by establishing which people
can be onboarded safely with minimal support and
which individuals will require more support, focusing
their resources on those on those that will require
more intensive input.
Recognising the challenge across all diabetes
services, we wanted to make this course freely
available, irrespective of whether they are part of
the DAFNE consortium. We have been successful in
securing industry funding enabling us to do this until
the end of March 2026.
More information about the DAFNE Closed Loop
