Young adult volunteers wanted
Volunteers
wanted for a
study of closed
loop systems in
young adults.
Article by study
coordinator
Sam James,
who also has
Type 1 diabetes.
"Closed-loop artificial pancreas
systems appear to be the future
of tTpe 1 diabetes care, however,
they are currently far from perfect.
I am exploring how closed-loop
systems can be can be adapted to
better suit young adults. I will do
this by speaking directly to as many
of them as I can in order to better
understanding their needs and wants
from such a system. You don't need
to have heard of or used a closedloop system to get
involved, only an
understanding of how tTpe 1 diabetes
has impacted your life.
I am doing a PhD in Digital Health
and Care at the University of Bristol.
My project is about developing a
multivariable closed-loop system,
essentially a group of devices that
interact to automatically manage
blood glucose levels. Specifically, I'm
going to look at adding physiological
data (e.g., heart-rate and GPS data)
from wearable devices into the
system. I want to develop this system
with the young adult population in
mind as this age range brings with
it many changeable factors that
make blood glucose management
particularly difficult. Therefore, I
want to speak to people in this group
so I can learn from your experiences
and make sure the system that is
developed will be of use to as many
people in this age range as possible.
I was diagnosed with tTpe 1
diabetes 19 years ago. In that time,
I have found the development in
diabetes technology to have been
incredible. I know the struggles that
living with Type 1 diabetes brings and
want to try and reduce that burden
for others with the condition."
Call to action!
Study coordinator Same James is
looking for people 18-25 years old,
live in the UK, have been diagnosed
with Type 1 diabetes and have selfmanaged
the condition for more than
a year. You also need to have moved
out of your childhood home in the
last five years (e.g., to go to university
or start a new job). Participating
in the study will involve filling out
consent forms (roughly 10 minutes)
and then a one-to-one online
interview (lasting up to an hour). You
will receive a £20 Love2shop gift card
for taking part. For more about Sam
