On the plus side
An update on the availability of Abbott's
FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor, and explanation of
additional features.
The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus
sensor - Abbott's latest
innovation to the existing
FreeStyle Libre 2 system
is now listed on the Drug Tariff
in England, Wales, Scotland and
Northern Ireland.
The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor
is compatible with the current
FreeStyle LibreLink app (and the
FreeStyle Libre 2 reader) and comes
with the following new features
compared with the FreeStyle
Libre 2 sensor:
• Extended sensor wear up to 15 days
• Partnerships with insulin pumps
and smart insulin pens
• Outstanding 15-day accuracy,
including strong low-end
performance
• Expanded age indication to
children two years and older
The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor is
designed to work with Insulet's nextgeneration
Omnipod 5 Automated
Insulin Delivery System, without
the need for additional devices,
connections or tubes, offering
personalised automated insulin
delivery and care for people living
with Type 1 diabetes, based on their
glucose sensor readings.
Continuous
development
This innovative sensor from Abbott
will further support people living
with diabetes in the UK, offering
another solution to monitor their
glucose levels with real-time
readings going straight to their
smartphones. Commenting on this
development, Professor Partha S. Kar,
National Specialty Advisor, Diabetes
at NHS England said: "It's good to see
another glucose sensor from Abbott
on the Drug Tariff, which will make
it easier for people with diabetes and
their clinicians to choose the Hybrid
Closed Loop system that is right
for them. Progress in the world of
technology in diabetes is continuous
and it is good for the NHS to be at
the forefront of it."
With the addition of the
FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor on
Drug Tariff, alongside the FreeStyle
Libre 3 system, Abbott is the only
manufacturer to have two sensors
available on Drug Tariff that can be
used with Automated Insulin Delivery
systems and Closed Loop systems.
Wide availability of the FreeStyle
Libre 2 Plus sensor is not expected
until June 2024, once GP systems
have been updated. All current users
of the FreeStyle Libre 2 system are
