- progress made
Tandem goes for growth
Tandem Diabetes Care has announced that it expects to treble its
worldwide customer base to one million people within the next five years,
mainly by switching more T1D users to its products but also by expanding
with more products for T2D users. The predicted growth would mean
global sales would jump from $700m (£511m) now, to $1.5bn (£1.09bn) in
2027. To read more CLICK HERE.
Talking on Twitter, Professor Partha
Kar stated, "In 2017, the % of #T1D
using non invasive glucose monitoring
in the #NHS? 4%. In 2022, that %
is? 64%. Now we sit on the cusp of
offering to everyone. Change may
take time but don't tell me it can't be
done. "Your dreams don't die when
you falter, they die when you give up."
Onwards …let's finish the journey.
Results from an American study of
more than 2,200 people with Type 1
diabetes and their caregivers, showed
a majority of those who opted
for telehealth care found remote
consultations just as effective as
face-to-face contact, or even better.
Although video consultations
were available before the COVID-19
pandemic, few people with diabetes
had ever been offered them and noone had investigated
what patients
thought about their efficacy.
The study by researchers from the
University of California Davis which
took place between August and
October 2020, was published in the
journal Endocrines and reported by
T1D Exchange. It found more than six
out of ten people surveyed had opted
for remote consultations during
the pandemic.
Of those, 85% said it had saved
them time, 44% said it reduced
stress and 29% said it saved money.
However only 17% said they preferred
video appointments overall, with
a similar number saying they
didn't like them and 65% saying
they would only use them in some
circumstances. The researchers
concluded that while telehealth can
be effective, it is not for everyone
and individual needs and preferences
should be considered as the
technology evolves.

Dust off your goggles!
Why not start the year with a new
challenge and swim the equivalent
of the channel (21 miles). Our
swim challenge is suitable for all
ages and abilities - you can swim
the distance at your local pool,
open water, or why not ask your
children's swimming club to take
on the distance together. Dig out
your swimwear and dive into the
deep end and swim the equivalent
of the channel to help fund vital
Type 1 diabetes research.
JDRF also has an annual swimathon.
New this year the charity
has created a Swim tracker so
that people can keep track of their
progress. All you need to do is
print it out, stick it on the fridge
and cross off each mile as you go.
The charity also has incentives
to help keep you motivated along
the way: Raise over £25 and you'll
receive a JDRF medal; £50 for a
JDRF tote bag; £100 for a JDRF
swimming cap!
Heck, collect them all!
Karen Addington has previously
completed in the Swim for Type 1
challenge. She said, "I got fit, learned
about managing my glucose levels
during sustained exercise and
became much more confident about
adjusting temporary basal rates early
and significantly to accommodate
exercise. I swam for longer and
further than I usually would and
enjoyed connecting with my family
and friends to fundraise for the
challenge."
