Where to turn?
Therapy can often help with the emotional challenges
of diabetes but which mental health professional is
best for you? Susannah Hickling finds out.
While your healthcare
professional might
be sympathetic
when your emotional
health takes a battering, you might
want more support to cope with
diabetes distress, stress, anxiety
and depression. NICE recommends
talking therapies but there are
many different types of therapy and
therapist.
What's in a name?
Talking therapies are also referred to
as counselling, therapy, psychological
therapy, psychotherapy and talking
treatment. In fact, the terms are often
used interchangeably and all refer to
the practice of talking to a trained
professional about your thoughts,
feelings and behaviour, as distinct
from using drugs or other treatments.

In theory, anyone can call
themselves a therapist, counsellor or
psychotherapist. In practice, the vast
majority are qualified practitioners.
But it's important to know the
difference between the different
kinds of mental health professional.
